Metropolis: Lux Obscura has a stunning film noir atmosphere that is not only striking in its comic book style, but also sexy and violent in its tone. The game is well voice acted with a gritty crime driven narrative. The visual style reminded me of Frank Millers “Sin City” albeit a little more colourful. You play as Jon Lockhart, a man fresh out of prison and hell-bent on revenge as he tracks down the person that framed him for murder.
Metropolis: Lux Obscura mixes up its comic book story based gameplay with an addicting match 3 puzzle game which simulates a fight between the main character and various npc’s! Match 3 of the symbols horizontally or vertically to afflict its corresponding damage type to the fight, slowly reducing your opponent's health until they are defeated. Sometimes if you play the game right you can match more than 3 for a damage bonus. This is a turn-based system and encounters vary in their challenge. Along with the chance to match symbols that do damage to your opponent you also have options to heal yourself, increase your rage for a damage buff or if unlucky get the cops on you, which incurs damage. The match 3 game style had nods to Tetris in that once 3 have been matched they drop down new rows of blocks to help move the game on. This creates some suspense as the new blocks that drop could really help or hinder your progression. At One point my health points were low and very close to that of my opponents, trying to figure out my next move gave me a genuine moment of tension, like a heated game of chess. The system can be quite challenging and being lucky or having a keen eye on the board can be the difference between winning or losing.
Picking the right upgrades after beating an opponent can also benefit your next encounter, for example upgrading HP gives you more health to start off with but upgrading the “Murderous” skill, for example, gives you a chance to deal double damage and this can help if you come up against harder enemies.
And yes, you will have to fight the guard dog!
Melding all these elements together is a good amount of boobs and beauties, but the game doesn’t just have knockers, it also has a cool soundtrack helping to set the tone and multiple endings to add some replay value although the story is quite short.
If you enjoy comics, cleavage or puzzle games then you are on to a winner with Metropolis: Lux Obscura, the game has a good pace, gripping story and eye candy galore. You can check out this game on PC now and release on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch will be coming April 4th, 2018. You can watch my video review below.
