Goblinz Studios 2D RPG "Dungeon Rushers" not only gives you some enjoyable turn-based action but under it's classic looking 8bit style the dungeons hide away some deep game mechanics that can be easily overlooked.
The game is cute and colourful but it really can be challenging the further you progress through the game. Careful placement of your followers along with packing the right equipment for a dungeon can be the difference between getting away with the treasure or becoming worm food.
You play as "Elian," bored of the daily grind and with dreams of great riches and adventure "Elian" decides to jack in his day job as a tavern toilet cleaner and to the dismay of his employer attempt to join the noble community of dungeon looters.
Throughout your journey, you will encounter colourful characters some of which will join you on your quest. There is some real banter between some of these characters including some amusing dialogue from enemies. Although the game has no voice acting the narrative is well written and easy to digest.
On entering a Dungeon from the world map you will be met by a board-game style system where you can choose which direction to explore. Each square is blacked out until you uncover it. The square you uncover could be safe but be warned it could trigger anything from deadly traps to an encounter with a number of different enemies types.
This is where your "Skills" come into play. Elian, for example, has a number of handy exploration abilities and skills. The "Pathfinder Skill" for example reveals 2 adjacent rooms up to the range of 2 squares, whereas the "Sabatour" Skill gives you a chance to disarm mechanical traps. These skills can only be used a few times though due to them using up the stamina attribute which can be enhanced with certain equipable items. You can also carry stamina potions amongst others types to use while in battle. Each character comes with their own unique skills all needed to overcome the challenges ahead.
You can also upgrade "Talents," these will allow you to upgrade things such as weapon damage, elemental damage such as poison effects or reducing the amount of Mana you use with magic attacks.
The combat is classic turn-based action, each side takes turns in trying to inflict as much damage as possible while minimising their own. This is where the real fun can be found, strategy and preparation are required on harder levels.
I did find the only thing that really got in the way of the flow of battle was the HUD element showing which attack I was going to use next. Sometimes this covered the enemy in front of me so I could not see how much damage my next choice of attack would inflict. I'm sure however this will be fixed in a later patch.
Amongst all this adventure comes a crafting system, being able to craft important items such as health potions or better armour will make all the difference. There is also a store where you can buy and sell items between dungeons.
Amongst all this fun comes an online matchmaking system which will allow you play along with or against your friends.
On the surface "Dungeon Rusher" might look a little basic, but under the surface, there is a deep RPG waiting for you to explore.
Go now adventurers, be brave, delve deep for great treasures await you.
Cringey Dad Gaming has scored Dungeon Rushers a 7 out of 10 for Decent.
The game is currently out on PC and will be coming to PS4 on the 25th of May 2018. The game will also release on Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, XboxOne, iOS and Android. Check out the website HERE
